Q&A: Can i use the Kindle 3 to read some of my already purchased books?
Question by meercat86uk: Can i use the Kindle 3 into read some of my already purchased books?
I am thinking of buying a kindle 3. I have been using a PDA as a reader for the last three years or so & have accumulated quite a few books – in mobi, epub & pdf mainly. Will i be able into use the kindle into read these books? From what i understand i will need into convert the epub books – is that right? Also is transfering these books over into the kindle relatively easy?
Thanks

It should read mobi & pdf, but never epub.
It’s one of the great shortcomings of Kindle, the lack of support for the most popular ebook format.

I haven’t tried this yet myself, but I looked it up before I ordered my Kindle 3.
You need to convert your epub books into unprotected mobi files, usually using free software like Calibre. Then you can use the USB or home wifi to move the files onto your Kindle. (If you email them to it there’s a fee.)
The pdf files are moved in the exact same manner as the mobi files.
Yes, you can put your own documents to the Kindle and read on it, these are called Personal Documents. See the section “Files Kindle Recognizes” on the official page here for what file formats the Kindle can support:

So MOBI and PDF files are supported, while EPUB is not support. You can convert EPUB to any Kindle supported format with tools like this one:

And as you know, Amazon just announced new models of the Kindle reader (mine is Kindle 2, and now it upgrades to the Kindle 3 and sold at the same price). Here’s a fresh review about the new Kindle:

I’ve also mentioned quite a lot about the new Kindle, which model to choose and where to get free books, in another answer here:
