Running from Solace

“They came hard candy on her shoulder, as if what was in the small wrapper, it should all better. I clung into the mint in my hand & buried my face into the hard leather seat, while what was going into happen into me explained. You promised that I will from at present on for sure. “

And so begins the journey of Naomi, whose amazing story begins where the past & future intersect. As Naomi fights into the ugly memories of physical & emotional yesterday, which insist on hiding haunting her dreams, she crosses paths with a boy, Xavier & his quick-tempered mother, Mona, who both share an interesting history, much like their own.

For some this is simply an excellent book to read for others it was as if Nakia Lashaul had read their diary and then wrote it in a book. So much of what took place in that book reminded me of my childhood. I laughed, cried and prayed a lot while reading it. I recommended it to my book club as the book I wanted to share and some have said they can’t read it – it’s too much. To them I say – realize how blessed you are. I wanted to share the book with others so that they could see why I love GOD like I do. ONLY GOD could allow me to experience most of what happened in that book and still turn out to be a great wife and mother. I can not wait until her next book comes out.

From the first chapter, page, sentence, Nakia Laushaul, plunges readers mercilessly into the heart-wrenching life of young Naomi. I felt every blow, every tear, and the heartbreaking thirst for love and acceptance, as this poor little girl suffered at the hands of a malicious mother. I wanted to wrap her in my arms and rock the pain away, just to tell her that everything would be okay … but it wouldn’t be–not for a long time.

As an adult, Naomi no longer has to worry about Mommy hurting her; now her worst enemy is herself. With a failing marriage, a rocky career, and mental demons tearing her to pieces, Naomi still seems to be as fragile as she was at the tender age of six. When she meets Mona, her son Xavier, and his siblings, Naomi’s life becomes a cyclone of turmoil, uprooting dormant but malignant pains of thirty years passed. When she’s unwittingly confronted with the origin of her affliction, Naomi must pull herself together before the pressure of it all collapses her.

Running From Solace is a strong debut novel, one that will pluck at your buried emotions and spark lively discussions for book clubs nationwide. Nakia Laushaul strings her words together so neatly and easily, pulling readers in with an almost melodic prose. The story launches you into a poignant and unforgettable journey. I’ll never forget Naomi. Well-crafted. Gripping. Shocking. Awesome!

Everywhere I looked I saw the cover of Running from Solace by Nakia Laushaul. There was quite a buzz about how wonderful the story was. I wanted to see if it was as good as others were saying, and if it was, what about it made it so daggone good. I will admit at first I was like this is just okay for me. As I read on something happened and I cannot explain exactly what happened, because this story is so far away from roses and sunshine. The subject matter of this book tore at my heart. I wanted to punch someone and knock the life out of someone else. I had to remind myself these characters were not real, but they easily could haven been.

Naomi began life in a not so good household. Her mother was powerless to the drugs she consumed on a regular basis. Because of that Naomi knew what it was like to be abused by the hand of the person she cherished most at that age. Her mother. Her saving grace came in the form of a nosey neighbor. From there on, Naomi’s life was a series of races. She was always running from some thing. What was that something?

As an adult, Naomi works as a social worker trying to save other children from the kind of things that happened to her as a child. When she takes on the case of a little boy named Xavier, things are all too familiar. His story is not that different than hers. The more she learns about Xavier, the more some of her dark past comes to light for all to see. All the running she was doing circled back and it was time for her to face her demons head on. What exactly did Xavier and Naomi have in common? What can she do to save them both?

Ms. Laushaul wrote from the heart of abused children and adults who used to be those kids who never really got over the abuse. Even though, they did not save themselves, they find it necessary to save the other children in the world that remind them of their younger self. The subject matter of this book is not for the faint at heart. All kinds of emotions will take over your body and make you want to avenge the lives of these children. I recommend Running from Solace to readers looking for a book with a powerful message about a strong subject matter. You will not be disappointed.
