The point of the Amazon Kindle is to promote sales for Amazon.
There are some “free” books on the site, but these are either author-released or free of copyright.
Authors deserve to be paid for their work.
If you want to read for free, go to the library.
Maybe the library?
Most new books are still under copyright, so it is unlikely that the publishers will allow them for free (at least legally).
However, there are a few places that you can get them, but most likely they will not be popular works such as the Twilight series.

Some authors allow free access to parts of their books (such as some short stories). If you find an author you like, try finding their website.
Libraries are currently still trying to work out the copyright issues and have not yet jumped on the e-book bandwagon, but there some good digital libraries out there.

For classics, and many other older books (which are often still totally worth a read) try here:

Sorry, but I only know these places have free books:

And I’ve previously bookmarked an article which mentions where to get very cheap books:

Hope it helps
